These artists have been redeeming a genre typically associated with the worst types of worldliness. This is not an exhaustive list of all that’s good in Christian Hip Hop (CHH). There are plenty of other great Christian artists in the scene (e.g., Caleb Gordon, Json, S.O.) but these are just the ones whose sound I personally enjoy the most.
Timothy Brindle
Not only a hip hop artist, Brindle is a PhD student at Westminster Theological Seminary. After Brindle was saved in 2001, he was discipled through Romans by Shai Linne. Killing Sin is one of his best albums. He also has a few children’s songs in the series, The Acrostic of God.
Beautiful Eulogy
Beautiful Eulogy is not your typical CHH group. They’re more experimental, blending into hip hop elements of folk, electronic, and even church hymns. This group originated in Portland, Oregon.
Hazakim
Hazakim is a Messianic Christian group from Florida comprised of brothers, Mike and Tony Wray. They were brought up in the Messianic Jewish movement and a lot of their music includes Hebrew rapping or singing.
Benjamin the Esquire
Check out his entire album, Lyrical Catechism.
Shai Linne
In case you didn’t know, Shai Linne also has a hip hop album for kids, Jesus Kids.
P4CM (Spoken word)
Not exactly hip hop, but there’s a lot of great Christian spoken word out there. You may remember Blair, Shai Linne’s wife, and her excellent piece called, “Allow me to reintroduce the Christ.” That was more than 16 years ago, but the Passion 4 Christ Movement (P4CM) still features Christian spoken word artists.
